Today is my friend Z's birthday. He's 29 years young, and hopefully he's celebrating like a mofo! Happy Birthday Z!

Happy 5 years

Today, August 28, 2006, marks my 5 year annivesary at my current job. I've been through a lot here. There are things that I've gone through here that I can't even mention, but hey, it's been a long fun-filled five years where I've met a ton of people, and learned a lot.

Thanks to everyone that has helped me along this road.

HOV for Bush? Not in VA!

Shrub had plans to go down I-395 on Tuesday to get to a fundraiser for George Allen. The Secret Service asked the VA DOT if they would be kind enough to shut down the entire HOV lane so that he could get there in a timely manner.

Not going to happen.

This would have caused a traffic jam that would have had tremendous ramifications for commuters in the DC area, where congestion has consistently been rated in the top 5 worst in the country.

Kudos to Virginia's Smart Traffic Center for denying the request and allowing commuters the right to drive on the roads that their taxes pay for.

Longest drive ever is back on

Previously, I mentioned that there was going to be a Russian cosmonaut that would hit a golf ball in outer space. That was postponed, but now it's back on for Thanksgiving.

The Roosevelt EP

My friend Scott is in a band called The Roosevelt, and today their debut EP was reviewed by DCist. Of the band members, Jon Mosher on guitar/vocals, Sam Mitchell on guitar, Scott Remley on bass and Chris Carney on drums, I only know Scott (I think).

If you're curious about their music, check out their web page, and you can even (legally) download their songs. It's some pretty good stuff!

Their CD release party is on September 8th, 9:30 PM at the Velvet Lounge on U St. Anyone for some live music?

My dive this weekend

This weekend, I went down to Cape Hatteras, NC. I went scuba diving with the Outer Banks Diving dive shop in conjunction with the National Dive Center here in DC.

The wreck that we dove on Sunday (Saturday was cancelled) was awesome. We got to go to the SS. Dixie Arrow off the coast of Cape Hatteras. I did manage to do my deepest dive ever (101 feet), and it was amazing. The schools of fish that are shown in pictures like this are all there, and they just part to let you by. It was truly amazing.

One of the things that I wanted to do on this dive was to come up with a souvenir from the site. I managed to pick up a Hairy Triton shell similar to this one. The snail was gone already, but I plucked it from the wreck near the bow of the boat. Pretty cool!

Since my camera is broken, I can't take any pictures of it, but I may have to borrow someone's to take a pic and post it.

PETA bumper sticker

One of the funnier things that I saw this weekend was a truck with a PETA bumper sticker on it parked in front of a grocery store. The truck had some fishing rods in it, which I thought quite odd.

Upon closer inspection of the sticker, I noticed that it was P.E.T.A. and stood for People Eating Tasty Animals. Something like this.

Scuba diving this weekend

This weekend, I'm going down to Cape Hatteras, on the Outer Banks area of North Carolina. Me and a few of my scuba diving buddies are going to go diving with Outer Banks Diving on a trip with the National Dive Center here in DC. It should be a great time, we're staying at the Hatteras Marlin, and I don't think that any of us have been there before.

It should be a great time. I've heard so much about the area, and many of the cars in this area have the OBX oval stickers, so it's got to be a popular place around here.

Unfortunately, the NOAA doesn't have a particularly favorable weather forecast for the area:

SAT
NE WINDS 20 TO 25 KT WITH GUSTS TO 30 KT. SEAS 5 TO 8 FT. A
SLIGHT CHANCE OF SHOWERS AND TSTMS.

SAT NIGHT
NE WINDS 15 TO 20 KT. SEAS 4 TO 7 FT. A SLIGHT CHANCE
OF SHOWERS AND TSTMS.

SUN
NE WINDS 10 TO 15 KT. SEAS 4 TO 6 FT SUBSIDING TO 3 TO 5 FT.

That area of NC is called the ship graveyard of the east, with Outer Banks Diving visiting a bunch of wrecks.

I'm going in a group of 4, and we're all PADI certified Open Water Divers, but I'm the only Advanced Open Water Diver of the four of us. That means that I can go to 120', where my friends can go to a maximum of 60'. I have not decided whether or not I'm going to go with them both days, or just one day and go see something else the other day.

Stay tuned, pictures to come (even though my camera is broken). I hope I don't end up like this seal though.

The Difference between guts and balls

We've all heard about people having guts or balls. But do you really know the difference between them? In an effort to keep you informed, the definition for each is listed below ...

GUTS - is arriving home late after a night out with the guys, being met by your wife with a broom, and having the guts to ask: "Are you still cleaning, or are you flying somewhere?"

BALLS - is coming home late after a night out with the guys, smelling of perfume and beer, lipstick on your collar, slapping your wife on the ass and having the balls to say: "You're next."

FEMA flicks finger to Fairfax

Fairfax County, VA is a fairly affluent neighborhood. It boasts some of the best public schools in the country and is home to many of some of the DC area's wealthiest citizens. During June 25 and 26th, that area's home were subjected to massive floods and sewage-overflow.

The Washington Post reportes that Dan Martinez, who was brought in by FEMA to oversee the county's applications for aid said the following,

"It's an affluent community that's able to address the specific needs of its residents."
I completely agree with the Chairman of the County Board of Supervisors that it is "insulting for FEMA to decide that the county's citizens were not deserving 'even though our federal tax dollars are more than welcome.'"

The bridge of Chuck Norris

In Hungary, there is a bridge that is slated to open in 2008. Since they don't have a name for it, the Economy Ministry has opened the naming of the bridge to the intarweb. Who is winning? Chuck Norris.
