Finally did it

I finally joined a gym. I joined the Washington Sports Club on Capitol Hill. I've gone twice on a guest pass that my HR Director at work gave me. I didn't go yesterday, because I went to Modern in Georgetown for a Chinese New Years party, and I've been hurting all day.

The things that I like about the gym are the gym itself (since I get to work out), the fact that they have a massage therapist there (still have to make an appointment for one), and that there is a sauna there. I'm going to go in about an hour, but I'll admit, I'm pretty sore. I haven't been particularly active of late, although I was running on and off a little bit. Something that I noticed though, is that my legs seem to be in great shape. I've biked a few miles at the beginning of my workouts just to get going, and then done some more leg exercises. My arms however, are not in very good shape. They're quite sore, and I think it may affect my pool game :).

The last time I was a member of a gym was when I lived in New York, and that was four and a half years ago. I went to the gym exactly twice in the some 16 months I was a member. Hopefully this time will be different. I've already gone the same number of times.

I want to get into shape so that I look good when I go to Mexico in May. Yeah that's the real reason.

Travel Travel

I've got an update for Chuq o de Mayo. It looks like the trip is going to be from May 11 through May 17. People may come and go as you please, but that's when I'll be there. A few people will be there with me, but most are coming and going.

Anyway, one thing that I wanted to point out (that my friend Jesse told me) was that the price of renewing or getting a passport is going to go up by close to 4x very soon. Right now, the fee is $69, and it'll be closer to $250 shortly. My passport expires in 2007, so I think I'm just going to go ahead and renew my passport before the trip to Cancun.

Email me if you want to come to Cancun, and I'll give you more details.

Intelligence Test

A friend of mine showed me this site:

http://intelligence-test.net/part1/

which allegedly tests your intelligence.

While I don't put much faith in the fact that it does actually measure your intelligence, it's fun. Right now I've got 26 correct out of 33. I don't have numbers: 7, 14, 28, 29, 30, 31 and 33.

If you want to see the ones that I've got, then click on this [ Spoiler ].

Then try part 2. I've got 9 right on it now.

Cool Civic Commercial

This Honda Civic ad is simply amazing. The soundtrack of the commerical is done completely out of human sound effects. Sweet.

Oh how I love the catnip!

Yet another hilarious picture attesting to how much Mr. Pipster loves catnip!

OMG I LOVE CATNIP SOOOO MUCH

Step 1 and 2 done

Alrighty, so I've backed up all the data that I had on the old server. I've reinstalled the operating system (used CentOS (a RedHat clone. I'm running updates now, and then I have to reconfigure everything.

This should be a fun journey. Any day now! Yeah, this is what I'm doing on a Saturday night!

Oh yeah, Redskins lost too! WOO HOO!

Step 1 almost complete

No, not this step 1, but this one: 1. backup data on doinkdoink.kaplink.net. I've still got a few GB to move, but I think I can do that from work. I do want to go through and clean up the data that I have and consolidate it, etc. but that's not required for this migration. Oh Typo is so pretty!

Greenhouse Gas and Global Warming

Scientists in Germany have reportedly discovered a new source of the global warming gas Methane: plants.

The study discovered that plants produced methane even in the presence of oxygen (which previously was not thought to happen). Also of interest is that it could impact the Kyoto Protocol which the United States has neither ratified or withdrawn from.

I wonder how the environmentalists are going to handle this one.

Typo update

Ok, so today, I tested the mt3.rb ruby script that is packaged with Typo. It works. And it works amazingly well.

One of the things that I will have to work on, is trying to ensure that I move all the data over correctly. And I don't mean the database content, or anything that is in the Movable Type interface. I am talking about files like pictures, links etc. Basically checking to make sure that all the other non-blog related files get transferred too. For that, I needed a link checker. During my search, I found: Xenu Link Sleuth. It can potentiallly DoS your server, but it nicely doesn't. However, the Webbrick test server that comes with typo does choke like a kid trying to swallow a bowling ball.

Next up:

  1. backup data on doinkdoink.kaplink.net

  2. upgrade doinkdoink.kaplink.net to an updated OS

  3. reinstall and configure all apps (ruby, rails, apache, bins, MySQL and a few other apps)

  4. move other content over

  5. migrate databases

  6. test test test

  7. go live

Then I will probably post a few posts, and then all will be good! Hmmmm. When to start. I guess I should choose a Distro first. I think I will likely abandon Fedora though. Suggestions?

Apple stock closes at an ironic price

Ok, so this is a very big geek joke. Following today's MacWorld Key Note speech by Steve Jobs, and the introduction of the MacBook Pro, prices of Apple stock closed at $80.86.

Too funny.

First seen here.

Seriously, switch to Firefox

I just saw this today, but ScanIt (a security company in Belgium) published a report that stated that Internet Explorer by Microsoft was found to be unsafe for 359 days in 2004. Yeah actually, that includes leap year. Please switch to Firefox, Opera, whatever. Just don't use IE.

Messy eater

I decided to give the boys some catnip today.

Sharing some catnip

Pip, being the aggressor, took over the scratching post, and therefore the catnip tray at the top. As he voraciously almost obscenely tore through it, I noticed that he was rubbing his cheeks in it, and probably would have rolled around in it if I had given him enough. He began to push the scratching post away, and then when he'd had enough, rolled in all the catnip that fell on the floor.

This is one of the funniest pictures I have of Pip.

Time for an update

A couple of things that I've wanted to do for a while, but haven't actually done (in a while).

One is skiing. I haven't been skiing in months. Either this week or next week, I'm going to go skiing. Who's in? Let me know.

The second is to get a massage. I haven't gotten a massage in probably years. I think my body is getting pretty weary since I haven't actually done much physical activity in a while (short of walking a few blocks a day which I don't count).

I have however, begun planning my annual birthday party, Chuq o de Mayo. Oh it's on, and I'm already scared. Not getting scared, just scared. I don't plan on getting as drunk as I have for the past ones though. This year it is going to be in Cancun, Mexico. Please join me. If I haven't invited you, please let me know. It's going to be a good time. I've already got 6 people confirmed, plus me.

Oh yeah, and I still have to update this blog and reinstall it to use Typo. I swear, I'm going to do it, even though I just learned a lot about Movable Type today.

Here's what it might look like:

(typo with iWTAP theme by Jonathan Hok)

Stay tuned, even if you don't believe me. I should probably stop playing with my new toy that I got for Christmas. Yeah, it wasn't the same thing this kid got.
