Unity 08

The world of politics is interesting. There are many issues that people can't agree with, and then there are party line huggers who adopt a party's platform/agenda/what have you and make it their own. While that doesn't seem very American to me, I guess it's also exercising your freedom (or lack thereof) of speech.

The folks over at Unity 08 have an idea. Come up with a Presidential ticket that represents the views of the majority of America. They claim that, "Recent Presidential elections, however, have not been focused on the middle but on the turnout of each party's special interest groups - with each party's "base" representing barely ten percent of the American people."

Now, that's what I thought Independent meant. Will this group also have to abide by FEC regulations? We'll see.

Personally, I'm VERY skeptical about the prospects for this idea. We have two parties for a reason, to debate and promote their different views on the issues. Through elections, the voters can endorse one side or the other, electing majorities that can enact their agenda.

To think that just by having a bi-partisan Presidential ticket, we'll end partisanship and attain 'unity' is naive. One or the other party will still be in the majority, seeking to enact their sides agenda. Having a VP of a different party than the President's won't do anything to change that reality.

Maybe I'm wrong, or just don't get the whole concept. Am I missing something?
